An exciting city situated in the North West of England on the banks of the River Dee. This area is steeped in history being the most walled city in Britain, dating back to 79 AD when it was founded as the Roman City of Deva.
The city walls span 3km around Chester offering a fantastic view of the area. Chester also boasts the second most photographed clock, The Eastgate clock, situated right in the heart of the city. Surrounding this clock are the Rows, two-tied medieval black and white timber galleries housing superb shops and restaurants.
The Roman connection is recognised in The Amphitheater, the largest to be uncovered in Britain. At the heart of the city is the magnificent Cathedral, another popular tourist attraction. Chester has its own Town Crier who can be heard from the Cross at midday between May and August. On the outskirts of Chester is Britain's largest Zoo with its reputation for animal conservation.
Chester's Roodee is the home of the country's oldest racecourse, the site of the old Roman harbour, racing dating back to the early Sixteenth century. The flat racing is held from May through to August at this popular racecourse. A spectacular Regatta is held annually on the River Dee; the river is enjoyed throughout the year offering boat trips and riverside restaurants.
Chester is a wonderful city offering superb tourist, shopping and socialising opportunities and is an ideal base for exploring North Wales, Cheshire and the Wirral.
